I agree with Backgame. Sounds like a typical Windows OS corruption on a forced shutdown (like power failure). Usually the remedy is to load the error recovery console (but you'd need the XP CD) and run:

chkdsk c: /p

( c: can be any drive letter where windows was installed). This is usually the most common cure for a large percentage of these situations. Likely the hard drive is intact and the data is there.
