I checked. In Nascar:

8 deaths in the 50's; 9 deaths in the 60's; 5 deaths in the 70's; 12 deaths in the 80's; 10 deaths in the 90's; 8 deaths thus far in the 2000's.

Not knowing the changes through the decades in the popularity of the sport, the number of drivers involved, the length of races, etc., it is hard to understand this data. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable in this area can explain.
