Joe, while NASCAR stats might not support Chuck's claim directly, openwheel series and f1 in particular will. Sportscar racing is the same (LeMans). I guess oval tracks and the heavy closed cars has seen least improvement. The open road tracks and lighter open wheel cars was by far more dangerous 30 years back or more. At Spa and other tracks the cars could easily hit trees and barns when they derailed off the track.
