"It says: Point-of-last-take for the trailer is when he is down a number of effective pips equal to the number of rolls to go minus three."

That rule is for a rolls vs pips position which this is not. Changing one side from a rolls position to a pips position with the same pipcount gives more variability in the number of rolls needd to bear off and that helps the trailer.
