Some amount of retraining GNU's net has occurred. See Michael Petch's comments here. However, it looks like Xavier has found some "secret sauce" to get an edge in training the neural net that he's not making public, so unless the GNU team makes a similar breakthrough, GNU is unlikely to catch up to XG any time soon.

I would say that at your level, the main advantage to getting XG is that XG is faster. So you can get equivalent rollouts with much less CPU time.

I don't think that it will take you much time at all to learn how to use XG. The basic features are pretty easy to learn. There are more advanced features but you don't have to pay any attention to them if you don't want to.
