If you have that hitter available down by one in the bottom of the ninth I am thinking it is best to have him lead off the inning. Note that if hits and a walk are mixed together in an inning it is best to have the walk be first.

Back in the Barry Bonda era, when he got a day off, the Giants would often use him as a pinch hitter in that type of situation. 9th inning, down by one, leading off the inning. I always felt he was hugely potent there.
