I gently introduced my kids to backgammon probably at the age of 2 or 3 by setting up a bearoff position for both sides with spares on 6,5 and 4 and just played a bearoff. Child goes first. Teaches them to count, follow simple rules, gets them familiar with reading the dice and moving the checkers including doubles. They can handle and enjoy this simple variant much earlier than the regular game.
