Here is his initial response:
I have actually spent a good chunk of my time in the past two days working on analyzing this particular event. I am trying to determine the conditions under which this happened, with the goal of answering exactly your question. Is it particularly unusual or not? My gut reaction is that it is NOT all that unusual; what is unusual is that we are able to see it happen with our own eyes, due to the high-def, slo-mo camera. But, that is just speculation on my part, at least for the moment.
I am trying to get the actual video, which was probably shot at 1000 fps (your "native" frame rate). I estimate (based on the known pitch speed) that the replay that all of us have been watching is only about 300 fps.
Anyway, this is definitely a work in progress for me.
I'll post more when he later corresponds.
