Variant

In the left-hand position (yours), White will usually hit twice regardless of whether Blue comes out or down with the 6. So, Blue will seldom be hitting back on the 18pt. Coming out may avoid having a fourth checker sent back, but it is more important not to fuel White's attack by letting her put a checker on her 7pt as she is hitting.

Compare to the right-hand variant. If Blue comes out with the 6 (clearly correct), he has non-trivial chances to hit back on the 18pt and he is much less like a lamb to the slaughter.
