I think "should" is an uninteresting question. The better question is, empirically, are professional athletes affected mentally/emotionally by this sort of thing? I tend to agree with you that the answer is no; if the coach decides to punt on 4th and 1, I do not believe the offensive unit will be emotionally scarred and unable to perform to its potential for the rest of the game because the coach has shown a lack of faith in them.

I am not any kind of authority, but my opinion is informed by the fact that I have never seen an actual professional athlete make this sort of argument. It strictly comes from armchair quarterbacks.
