I find it hard to believe we have reached the limits of human athletic achievement in just about any activity, although we are at a point where Olympic records tend to advance by small increments rather than by leaps and bounds. But it almost doesn't matter because even if the differences are small, there is still value in seeing who can run the 100m dash .01 seconds faster than anyone else. But in backgammon - and I suspect this was part of Wilcox' point - the massive variance inherent in the game easily drowns out any slight superiority that the best player might possess.
