Bob, it depends on the population for which you use the ELO based rating system. In DBgF flight isolation is not a problem. We have plenty of throughput from single flight tournaments, team leagues and other matchups between players of very different strengths.
If you took the rating system to use in ABT events only, you'd get the isolation problem. At least if you did it starting off all players at the same rating. In that case, I'd suggest you modified the start-up formula, to use differentiated start ratings. So if a new player (new to the rating system not backgammon) is entering flight A he would start at rating X. If he entered flight B, he would start at rating Y.
I guess there are many ways to mitigate the risk of isolated rating groups that get out of sync.
Another problem (which we also do not experience in DBgF) is geographical isolation. It is rarely a problem in the very top of the population, but a big problem at the lower ratings, since the players here are mostly recreational players that would never consider buying a flight ticket to go play backgammon nor drive for a couple of hours...
