>> How many times have you seen a player standing on the 18th tee with a two stroke lead pull out his/her driver? I've seen it way too many times to think that most of those players have considered the risk/reward.

I guess we agree then, that not all players do their homework in calculating what proper course management dictates in different situations.

But I must admit, that this is not a simple task by any means, since it can be very difficult to asses your percentages when tired/under pressure. I recall stories about Gary Player hitting balls non-stop for hours, simply to get tired and then work on his game/swing under that condition.

And a driver is not just a driver. It can be hit offensively (either hard or taking an aggressive line) or defensively. Also you might have a natural curve on your drive, which suit the hole in question making it less of gamble than what it appears to be.

When taking a shot on the 18th under pressure, it can be useful to select a "routine shot", that you have practiced and played in competition over and over again. Eg. your standard drive. Rather than working out some alternative plan with a "theoretical" safer shot that you might not consider a routine shot in the situation.

Finally Chuck, knowing the score is a prerequisite to choosing the mathematical correct play! And there are a surprisingly large group of professionals, who claim, that they choose not to look at the leaderboards but instead focus 100% on their own game...
