Interesting. I was so sure that the quotation you found was wrong (well, very probably it wasn't) that I went to my bookshelf to prove it. As it turns out, I don't seem to own a copy of the first part of the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy. The reason I was so sure was that the German translator, as I could confirm by googling, did see the 'r' that wasn't there and translated as "bescheuert wie eine Bürste". Neither daft brushes nor daft bushes are idiomatic at all in German, but the image of the daft brush somehow stuck with me and primed by it, I didn't notice the missing 'r' when reading the original text later.
