IMO, novice/beginner events should be all about getting in lots of play. If it's more about winning, then move up to the intermediate. Sandbaggers' edge should be minimized. I like Phil's DMP contest because it provides max play (no double+pass option) and minimizes variance. Then go with a round robin format, so everyone plays every round regardless of W/L record. R-R's are frowned upon in general because of collusion, etc. But with DMP and novices, the incentives and opportunities are just not that available/exploitable.
