I can't imagine anyone entering a chess tournament, poker tournament, scrabble tournament or any other competition and not expect their game to be recorded and made public, especially when the game is televised or broadcast.
I do understand why individual backgammon players don't like the idea of their matches being recorded, analyzed, and published or publicized....they don't want people to know how good or bad they play. Or, in some cases, they don't want people to get the wrong impression about their play....if I am playing a weaker player, or a very very strong play, I may well change my game from what I think might get me to lowest PR rating, and it's not fair if people see me play at 6.0 when I could have played at 4.5.
I can also understand why intermediate and novice players do not wish to see their matches scrutinized publicly.
What is needed are rules that are fair, make sense, and are for the good of the game. And here, I have to go along with Bill on this issue. If you enter a public tournament, in a public place, I believe you give up the right to restrict the world from seeing your games and your evaluations and your play and strategies. I believe that should be written in the rules of the game or on the tournament entry form and brochures, and if you don't like it, then don't enter the tournament. At the same time, in order to make lower-level players feel more comfortable, I believe it is reasonable and fair and for the benefit of the game to not allow the matches and games of players below the Open Level to be made public without permission of the players. There really is no reason to make those public and we don't want to scare people away from coming.
Now, as Bill said, of course there will be a few people who object to their games being recorded and publicized...Nack is probably one of the most famous objectors in this area. Well, as much as we all love and respect Nack, and as much as we all would love to see him playing, YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE.
So I stand with Bill on this one. I am against anyone restricting the access to matches played at live events in the Open and Masters divisions.
As for matches played on line, in USBGF and other tournaments, I do not consider that to be a "public" event and if the USBGF decides that it wants to control to data, and if it believes it does not want public access to those matches, particularly since many of the participants are not open players and because they might suffer participation as a result, they certainly have the right to make that determination and I think we all should respect that right and decision. However, if you disagree with USBGF policy, it is a democratic organization of the players and you have a right to voice your opinion, but I defend the USBGF's right to make those kinds of decisions for tournaments that it sponsors and runs.
