In that example we needed to do certain things so that we could win. This is completely different.

I'm not seeing "completely." In the other position, the thing we needed to do to win more often was keep the prime longer. In this position, the thing we need to do to win more backgammons is keep the prime longer. In both cases, there was a cost in additional losses due to increased hits.

Well yes, that's hyperbolically true (also called sometimes "false," but anyway....). He's got the 6 point, the 8 point, the midpoint. And 5 more checkers, which were on the bar at the time. But I agree that the point your diagram raises, Stick, is valid -- I've played such positions out enough to know that it's a lot easier to turn a "nothing" into a "something" than many might think.
