But Christian, it's only "unfair" depending on what your objectives are.

Daniel's recent post nails it.

The national championship is simply NOT the tournament made for mr. nobody ranked number 1100 in the Danish rankings... For him, there are hundreds of opportunities to play and improve throughout the year. In the major championship, you will want to see the top of the pops slug it out at the end.

But then, every one should have some chance to enter and give it a shot. They are all members of the federation. It's a balance. And the two formats both try to strike such a balance.

It sounds like what you object to, is not giving all 1000 members the exact same chance at becoming champions - no matter their rating?

BTW: While some of my points in the long post merely was correction of non-important errors, some was actually pointing out that what you listed as unfair in fact wasn't so (eg. the 7 byes in the final cup, that were not based on ratings, but on results of day 1 and 2).
