In Response To: Estimating how much time I'd take in a clocked match (Timothy Chow)

With my experience as a director, I typically expect that a ROUND of 7-pt matches is going to take 70 minutes (10 minutes per point of match length). When we use clocks at my three yearly events (two ABT and the VIETOR CUP), I do NOT want a player's clock to expire, just want them to keep moving at a reasonable pace.

The clocks do that really well. I have a couple of physically challenged players and their clocks are set (by me) at 2/15. The 15 seconds free time per move allows them to pick up the dice and roll them out and play without running out of their reserve-time (2x7=14 minutes for a 7-pt match).

This is all done in the CHAMPIONSHIP division (not in the Intermediate or Novice divisions). With your high level skill in BG, you should not find yourself timing-out to lose a match.

With the clocks, comes two real pluses: (1) no one is shaking their dice while you are thinking about your move, since clock rules only use one-pair of dice that are shared between the two players; hit your clock, opponent then picks the dice, shakes and rolls). (2) There is never a question as to what was rolled, since the dice are still on the board, following a player's played roll. Only picked up after s/he hits their clock.
