Giving up the midpoint takes a lot of pressure off of White. It looks like a clear mistake to me when we have plenty of alternatives. We're not far down in the race, so making points in order, while preferable, isn't as big a deal as it might be. 8/2 looks fine to me, along with any reasonable 2 -- 6/4, 5/3, 4/2.
