Creating and Testing New Ideas

In Response To: Answers to questions about *New tournament format* (Mika Laukkanen)

I join with those who are dismayed at how you handled what was intended to be objective criticism from others in this forum. I am sure none of them meant anything personal, and perhaps there is some bit of a language and/or cultural barrier to constructive communication here.

If I were trying to devise a new tournament format, two of the first people I'd consult about it would be Bob Koca and Jason Lee. If they objected to something I wanted to do, I would listen to their reasons and not assume they were afraid of change or gutless. After all, the appeal to innovation is just as illogical as the appeal to tradition--both beg the question of the merits of whatever is being proposed.

But I do give you credit for something important here: You seem willing to try out your new ideas yourself, rather than attempt to get someone else to do it, and also take the financial loss if it doesn't work out well. There's a big difference between standing behind your ideas personally and financially, than wanting to see them tried out with other people's time and money.

I see several flaws in this format you have proposed also, and cannot picture something like this working for large groups or Open events. But as a variant to try out at a local pub or whatever, I can see that it would have the advantage of promoting socializing among players of widely varying ability, and assure the weaker players of getting several matches. Good luck with your experimentations!
