The race is close enough that the POH play is probably right. When the pip-count advantage is getting close to something like 14 or 15, you can consider playing to avoid contact.

After the hit, White is an 30/70 underdog to hit back. Putting White on the roof also leverages the small advantage Blue has in the gammon differential. White’s open 6pt means that he won’t be winning many gammons.
