It's counterintuitive, but once you've studied match equity, your hackles go up immediately upon holding a cube while behind in the match and where losing on the current cube would put your opponent nearly out. That situation often makes for correct doubles from behind, and the only way to know how far behind is to calculate the take and double points, which most experts and many intermediate players (like me) are able to do with at least moderate accuracy (within a few percentage points of gwc) in their head from memory.

For instance, I could have found this double OTB, and I wouldn't really call myself an expert.
