Give your opponent a board, and then, of course, you have to play safe. When you volunteer in the original position, 9 of the 20 numbers that hit will force your opponent off the 1pt. According the XG dice distribution dialog, only 55 is really bad for you. The other 5s are just average in terms of your resulting equity.
I checked DMP, where XGR++ also gives 6/5 3/off a slight edge over 5/4 3/off, but has lifting the 6pt behind by 0.018.
Is there a takeaway you can look for in the future? I am not sure. Backgammon has many odd positions that yield idiosyncratic, counterintuitive plays. Sometimes you have to just let them go, knowing you’ll misplay a few odd ducks from time to time. On the other hand, the two open points high in your opponent’s board ought to be a red flag of sorts.
I am fairly confident I would make your play is a similar position.
