While Millard Hopper is the go to source for experts, even as we pretend to use XG, my copy was smudged by the haze caused by the fires of Sumatra, and I am having it drycleaned. So I cannot give you a definitive answer on the "misprint" question, but may offer this insight into Millard's way with words. If your orientation is your "home board," then you may think of your back checkers as having been sent on reconnaissance into enemy territory. Having performed their missions behind the lines, they abandon this distant outpost and retreat towards home.
