I am not sure what OLM stands for.

On-Line Match.

I am still mystified as to the point of it.

You get whatever you want out of it. An opportunity to learn something, an opportunity to play a match as a group. People are participating, that means they think there's a point to it for them.

Mostly contributors just give their play no logic or reasoning is given.

Everybody contributes in their own way, and I'd say most people do give some reason for their play.

There appears to be no learning curve.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean the problems aren't getting harder? They're not going to; it's a real match, not a series of increasingly difficult problems. Do you mean the people voting aren't learning anything? There's no possible way you can know this.
