Don't know much about XGR+. I don't use it.
In addition to the endgames mentioned by Philippe, positions where a normal 3-ply eval might be problematic can also be a problem for XGR++. Backgames are an obvious example.
The 3rd-roll positions you have been studying lately occur so frequently that it makes sense to rollout the close calls.
At least, that's my take on it.
