And now that I am reading the responses, I see this.
How do you get to this play? Easily. When playing 1-away (or DMP), and you have a substantial lead, then you want to prepare to pre-clear, or to unload the back of a closed board as early as you can. You want your opponent to enter, and all other considerations are thrown aside. Put more simply, if you win by having your opponent get off the bar, then create that opportunity. Gammons dont count, so maximize absolutely your single wins.
From an experience perspective, it is foolish to allow the bizarre sequences where your opp dances, and 'somehow' you leave a blot while he can still shoot at it, to even exist. So keep picking up from the back of the board when you can safely keep it even at the back, or prevent future mishaps.
