This is some well known paradox. Jacoby Paradox? I don't remember the name but that isn't important but the concept is.

Holding the cube with 52 vs 6 you win 19 times right away and 1/4 of the 17 times when you miss for a total of 23.25 wins.

If you cube you win 19 times and then get recubed the 17 times when you miss and have an optional drop/take so you effective lose 17 times for a total of 19 wins.

The student should do the math and see why 23.25 wins with the cube on 2 is lots better than 19 wins with the cube on 4, but there's a Danny Kleinman method known as Excess 18 Arithmatic to do this. 19 is one more than 18, so with the cube doubled it is like winning 20 times (double the excess of 18 and add to 18)
