Too often we don't make the correct play because we don't consider it. While the cute shift may not be best if you did see it when looking at the position you've overcome one hurdle in not erring in others. For example in the position below unless you've seen this type of play before and taken the time to understand it you likely wouldn't even have the right play enter your thought process.
