Another reason to see the "hole shift" is mostly to create more numbers from outfield checkers. I dont have a positional example at hand, however, moving the hole backwards can sometimes generate more covering/making numbers from the outfield, rather than using the roll to move the backfield checkers in, you move the homeboard hole back. This has greater significance depending on the strength of opponents position. Its a theme in "Bagai's".

I did see the shift here, but I dont like it. Here, I like 13/12,6/4. Its tempting to duplicate the 3s with 13/10, and OTB I would toss up between these plays.
