USBGF Legal Moves Policy

The reasoning here is to avoid having the thought processes of the players interrupted by spectators. When you consider that a spectator could be wrong, you can see the motivation for the remedy provided in the USBGF recommedation. A spectator can inform the director (or other tournament official) if he sees an illegal move. Of course, this is a weak remedy. By the time an official can become involved, the illegal move will have become permanent by subsequent plays.

My own preference would be to allow spectators to point out illegal moves. If a spectator abuses this privilage, perhaps there could be some sort of gag-rule to silence him. Alternatively, before the match begins, both plays could agree to allow one or more spectators to monitor illegal moves.
