The rollout indicates that our position is worse than I thought it was. Having a bad position usually means that bold plays that gain a lot when they work are more attractive; if you're already losing then you don't lose as much when a risky play goes south. 6/2 gives you much better chances of making a five-point board than 8/4 does, and keeping White dancing gains you a lot since you need time to escape your back checkers.
To test this theory I would try modifying the position to improve Blue's plight and/or weaken White's advantage. For example, one way to improve Blue's position is to move one of his back checkers out to his 16pt. In general I would expect that the more you strengthen Blue's position and weaken White's, the more you would lean towards the safe 8/4 and away from the bold 6/2.
