There are so many great chess books to choose from. It is hard to decide.
These are all mostly for low intermediate to high intermediate.
1) I'm excited about this book, even though I admit I haven't seen it yet.
Yaroslav Srokovski "Chess Training for Post-Beginners"
2) Anything by Jeremy Silman is gold. Depending on level, you might look at
How to Reassess Your Chess
The Amateur's Mind
Silman's Complete Endgame Course
3) I also like Yasser Seirawan's "Winning Chess" series. These are probably more beginnerish than Silmans.
4) John Nunn's books are also good. For example, "Learn Chess Tactics" or "John Nunn's Chess Course"
5) You might try Chessbase DVD's too. These are video files you can play on your computer. I like the "Power Play" series by Daniel King, but there are other options.
6) Yet another option is a website subscription service. Some possibilities (there are more):
chess.com
chessclub.com
chesslecture.com
