Small tournament without Crawford - Advice needed

It's not even clear that the complexity of heuristics needed to play well is more complicated. You're judging it from the perspective of someone who is already familiar with the heuristics needed to play with the Crawford rule; that's not a fair comparison.
Well, with the Crawford rule in place the live gammonless takepoints range from about 17% to about 26% in a 5 point match (ignoring the easy post-crawford and 2a2a cube actions), which is not that different than for money. A beginner who just treats all scores as if they are money won't be all that far off.
Without the rule you have takepoints that range from 3% to 49% or so. They're all over the map, and a beginner who treats the scores as if they are money play will make huge blunders. I suppose there only nine scores to remember for a three point match, but if you play with Crawford the cube is either dead or trivial for six of those. Seems a lot simpler to me.
