I think this one of those positions where depending on your style of play and preferences will influence which play you "see". I'm quite an attacking player and I love to win gammons so I "saw" the ace-pojnt play immediately and rejected 11/8 as too conservative. I think a slightly more conservative player might "see" 11/8 first and make the play for the reasons Timothy mentioned.

As it turns out making the ace-point wins 19% more gammons whilst costing 3% in game wins, that's my kind of play!

In the bot age I have heard people bemoan that less players have a "style" as everyone is striving to make the "correct" play, but many times in Falafel's insightful commentary he often says things like "I would hit here, it's more my style". Here making the ace-point is definitely more my style of play.
