I have a dumb question

I've heard it before, but never fully understood it. Why are matches to odd numbers of points. Why not an 8 point match or 6 point match?

I have a student who I play 4 point matches with because I think it is particularly important to learn to play at 4a/4a and 4a/3a, 3a/3a and 4a/2a match play and we get to those scores quicker and more often by starting 4a/4a.
