Thanks for posting this Igor, i'll take a stab at it. I'll offer two perspectives...First, in reality, over the board, i really doubt i would double here. I don't understand the backgame well enough to execute it and win my share of the games. This position looks a little dicey to me, trailing by 78 pips, it appears we have the timing for a backgame.... it could easily go either way. If I offer a bad cube, my opponent is likely to beaver, and *bang*, i'm down 4 points. I don't think blue has the gammon chances at this point to impel me to cube to collect the gammon points.
Second perspective, since you always post great challenge problems, i smell the hint of a cube for blue, and i suspect the correct action is to cube here. I see no bad rolls for blue, and white will have challenges with 1s and 2s especially if we clear a checker from each of the 23, and 22 points. 6s and 5s could be a challenge for white, and 3s, 4s either gain little for white, or leave white vulnerable with blue beginning to take control of the outfield.
What should blue's strategy be in prosecuting the backgame here? Clear a checker from the 22, 23, and shoot for more blots inside his board? Or is the priority to clear the back checkers and collect white's blots as white tries to come around? Or is the priority to fill in our board and wait for white to escape his backmen. My personal experience in these situations is typically 3 to 4 blunders of the order of -.100! ouch!
