There may be more to it (such as the reason scotty suggests) but the reason I would make the right play is that 55 takes a guy off after 12+6, and doesn't after 6. That must be very important since taking a guy off will likely save a roll. And part of the reason for the wrong play being a blunder is probably that opp is close to a cube, which sort of amplifies the cubeful equities that XG is working with.
