To me, the surprising position isn't Position 3 but Position 2. Making the 5pt is just generally better because it is a home-board point. If you hit then your opponent has 9 dancing rolls instead of 4. So I think that what needs to be explained is not why the 5pt is better in Position 3, but why making the 5pt is so much worse than the bar point in Position 2.

I think that Grant's suggestion that making the bar point gives White bad 6's is a good suggestion. What happens if you modify Position 2 by moving White's 5pt spare to her midpoint, giving White a decent 6 and also giving Blue a slightly better chance of surviving a hit?
