I think one reason why GNUbg comes up in this context is that it is still the most scriptable bot for this type of thing. It has a command line interface that can be interfaced with stdin and stdout (standard input and output), it has a Python interface, and it has built in support for pitting two different copies of GNUbg against one another using sockets.
In the old days there was Tony Lezard's Dueller software that allowed you to automate play between bots like Snowie, BgBlitz, GNUbg, and Jellyfish. In some cases the bots were controlled by screenscraping and creating fake mouse and key strokes to mimic human input. As far as I know the only bots that didn't need to be controlled in this manner were BgBlitz and GNUbg.
On a side note: If someone downloaded GNUbg v1.03.000+ (or 1.04.000) and happened to try playing a remote bot (or automate it using sockets) there is a bug that was introduced earlier in the year that may prevent it from working properly. Coincidentally I released a new version of GNUbg yesterday to deal with that issue. It can be found here:
