The first and second of these are relatively straightforward. What was tricky for me was to figure out that the third is more like the second than the first.

By hitting, Blue puts a second White checker on the bar. If he can close those checkers out, that alone will up his gammon chances. But in case White hits back from the bar, Blue will get a shot at picking up a third checker. If he misses that, he figures to be able to hit loose on the 3pt before White can cover there. After that, the pattern repeats.
