Although, QF (and your subject) suggest I will be wrong, I'll take the bait.

The safe play, 11/2, leaves a brittle position that Blue will find difficult to improve. Indeed, just finding a safe play could be a challenge. White's open 6pt invites Blue to try the more flexible move, 11/5, 8/5.
