UBK has pointed out a zillion times that if we used the variance reduced results instead of PR, you remove the issue of having to play for a low PR, thereby inducing weird moves. To try to "win" the VRR result, you always just make the play you think is best to win the match. That's what you do in normal backgammon.
The reason that VRR hasn't caught on is that most people don't understand it. Somehow, PR has caught on, and we all "understand" what a PR of 4 means.
Well, I'd say very few people could give a definition of PR any better than they could give a definition of a VRR result.
