If you lift the 8pt what do you play next turn after the opponent has covered his 4pt? You will still want to play that outfield checker but have few numbers to do so. Instead you'll be forced to play within' your inner board however the dice dictate because leaving a direct shot at that point will be far too expensive. You might roll a six and be forced to leave a direct or toss two bigger numbers fuglying up your inner board. All this can be avoided by coming around the corner now. The 8pt itself isn't so valuable. It is nicer to keep it and break it later when it breaks in a cleaner fashion though.
