"The Trick" pre-Crawford

Many, perhaps most, BGO readers know about The Trick.
Someone on rec.games.backgammon pointed out that one could try an analogue of The Trick at a pre-Crawford score where one has an auto-recube. Instead of auto-recubing immediately, one waits until one has a market loser. (Arguably, this is more like delayed doubling at 2-away/2-away than The Trick, but whatever.)
How common is this ploy? Does it often work?
Can you artificially improve your PR in this manner? That is, do you get credit for a series of non-trivial, correct cube decisions?
