How common is this ploy?

That's a negative. I'll say never until someone tells me a story.

Can you artificially improve your PR in this manner?

It seems you can. The easy way to test it is to set up a position (race) where the player holding the cube has an optional double every turn. Play out X amount of moves perfect, eventually double and play the last move incorrectly. Note the sequence (play against yourself using manual dice). Note the PR at the end of said experiment and repeat except this time cube on the first roll and do everything else the same. Your PR should be lower in the first instance than the second.
