Is lying to a TD a big deal?

Should a TD ignore that fact that disputants have lied to him about material facts he has been asked to rule on? In the USA, lying to a police officer or lying under oath is a serious offense that can carry a stiff penalty. What should the penalty be in backgammon?

Although this issue did come up in the recent dispute at the Nordic Open, my question is intended only as a hypothetical. Please do not rehash the recent events in Denmark in this thread.
