The scenario you describe does not require that the hit be allowed to stand.

Nevertheless, I would usually allow the hit against me if the motion were all part of one action. If there were a pause between the punching of the clock, and the picking up of the checker, then I would not allow the hit. If the hit had been clearly indicated before the clock was punched, I would be even more inclined to allow it.

If my opponent has a history of taking cheap shots, however, I am unlikely to cut him any slack. There is only one player in my local club whom I have placed into this category.
