The "I'll spot you a checker" gag: which checker?

I only recently heard of this old ploy sometimes used to teach newbies the importance of their limited arsenal. You tell the player that you'll give him or her an advantage by allowing them a "head start," letting them remove a checker before the game has started. Of course, this is hardly the advantage most beginners might think. I'm amused and intrigued by this. When this is done, which checker is usually removed from the victim's opening setup? Which checker would you like your victim to remove? Thanks!
